Taxonomy and Classification
Agarophyton vermiculophyllum is a species of red seaweed native to the northwest Pacific Ocean. It is also a prevalent invasive species which has spread into the coastal waters of Europe and North America. The ability to survive around the world stems from the species tolerance to environmental changes such as temperature, salinity, and terrain.
The morphology is made up of a few long cylindrical primary branches of tissue followed by many degrees of smaller subbranches protruding from the primary.
In favorable conditions it has a dark red blackish color but may become green to pale green in less favorable conditions. Economically, Agarophyton vermiculophyllum, with its bioresilience, is able to grow in aquaculture systems and in natural areas at high density to produce agar and other bioproducts.
Furthermore, it provides ecological services ranging from carbon sequestration, water treatment, sediment stabilization, and a potential for biofuel production.
